About Fraga do Eume Natural Park

Fraga do Eume Natural Park is located in the Galicia region of northwestern Spain and encompasses one of Europe's best-preserved Atlantic oak and chestnut forests. Spanning the steep-sided gorge of the Eume River, the park covers a rugged landscape characterized by dense, verdant forests, crystal-clear streams, and dramatic rock formations. Established in 1997, the park covers over 9,000 hectares of predominantly native forest that supports a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. The region's temperate maritime climate sustains moss-covered trunks, ferns, and an assortment of wild orchids, making it a sanctuary for botanists and nature lovers. Wildlife includes species such as roe deer, wild boar, otters, and numerous bird species, including the European dipper and kingfisher. Visitors are drawn to the park for its network of scenic hiking trails, including routes that lead to the historic Monastery of Caaveiro, a 10th-century cloister perched on a rocky spur overlooking the river. Other notable landmarks include the medieval bridge of A Capela and tranquil river pools perfect for photography and wildlife observation. The park’s combination of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and well-maintained paths offers a serene escape from urban life and a chance to immerse in Galicia’s unique Atlantic forest ecosystem.
